High Pole Lion Dance: The Art of Performing in the Sky

High Pole Lion Dance: The Art of Performing in the Sky

Of everything in the lion dance repertoire, nothing stops a crowd like the high pole routine.

Two performers, one lion, and a row of steel poles rising metres off the ground. The lion leaps between poles, balances on the tail performer's thighs, rears up on the highest platform, and makes the audience forget there are two humans inside at all.

What it demands:

  • Years of foundation work: nobody touches the poles without mastering ground routines first
  • Absolute trust: the head performer literally jumps blind, trusting the tail to catch
  • Strength and precision: one mistimed step is a long way down

High pole performances suit grand venues: mall atriums, stadium events, and major celebrations where you want jaws on the floor.
